Privacy policy

At Magpie, we help you find better prices on the things you want. To do that, we need a little information, such as your email address and the products you ask us to track.

We keep things simple. We don’t sell your personal information, we don’t use affiliate links, and we don’t build advertising profiles of our users. We collect what we need to run Magpie, send your alerts and manage your account.

Below, we’ll explain what information we collect, why we need it, how long we keep it and who helps us run the service. You can also download or delete your data yourself.

If you have any questions, just email us at info@magpie.ie.

Who we are

Magpie is based at 24A Baggot Street Upper, Dublin 4, D04 N528, Ireland. We are responsible for the personal information described in this policy. In data protection law, this is known as being the data controller.

In the UK, Magpie is a trading name of Headline Productions Limited, registered in Northern Ireland (no. NI627084). If your billing address is in the UK, that company is also a data controller for your billing details, including your name, address and payment record.

Magpie remains responsible for everything else covered by this policy, including the products you track and the alerts we send you.

Wherever you live, you can contact us at info@magpie.ie with any privacy questions.

What information we collect and why

We collect different types of information depending on how you use Magpie.

We only use this information for the purposes described above and other purposes permitted by law.

A note about passwords and payments

We never store your original password in a readable form. Supabase Auth stores a hashed version used for authentication.

We also never see or store your full card number. Stripe handles card payments and gives us a customer reference and the payment outcome.

If you start a free trial using only your email address, you don’t need to provide card details. If you start a trial with a card, Stripe keeps your card details for the first charge under its own privacy policy. We retain the Stripe reference, not your card number.

What happens before you sign in?

If you look up a product before signing in, we use a one-way, salted hash of your IP address to help prevent automated activity, such as someone running thousands of lookups.

We don’t store your IP address itself, and we cannot recover it from this hash.

If you sign up using a link containing campaign information, such as an advertising campaign or a link from our other website, TicketLoop, we may store those campaign tags. We read them from the link itself and don’t need to put anything on your device to do this.

What we deliberately don’t collect

We believe you should be able to use Magpiewithout feeling that you’re being followed around the internet.

Here’s what that means in practice:

We also count page views using a tool that doesn’t set anything on your device or assign you an identifier. This lets us understand which pages are being read without building a profile of individual visitors.

Price history isn’t a profile of you

Magpie keeps a record of how product prices change over time. This helps us show whether an item has genuinely become cheaper and how its price has changed over time.

That price history is about the product and the retailer, not about you. It doesn’t contain a personal identifier and remains in our records even after you delete your account.

For example, we can use price history to see whether an item has dropped in price compared with what it cost earlier in the year. We don’t need to keep your personal information to maintain that history.

How long we keep your information

We keep information for only as long as we need it for the purposes described in this policy, subject to any legal requirements.

We keep unsubscribe records deliberately. If you ask us not to email you, we need to retain enough information to make sure we don’t accidentally start emailing you again.

Product price history is kept separately from your account and is not deleted when you delete your account.

Who helps us run Magpie?

A small number of service providers help us operate Magpie. They process information on our behalf under contractual arrangements and are not permitted to use it for their own independent purposes.

When push notifications are enabled, Google or Apple receives the notification text and your device’s push address so it can deliver the alert. They don’t receive your email address through this process.

Some of our providers are based in the United States. Where personal information is transferred to them, we use applicable safeguards, such as the EU–US Data Privacy Framework or standard contractual clauses, where appropriate.

We don’t track you when you visit a retailer

When we link to a product in an email or on the Magpie website, we use an ordinary link to the retailer.

Our links don’t contain affiliate tags or click identifiers, and they don’t identify you to the retailer. We earn our revenue from subscribers, not from commissions on purchases.

If you click through to a shop, that retailer sees an ordinary visit from you, just as it would if you visited the shop directly. The link doesn’t tell the retailer your Magpieemail address, your account details or the other products you’re tracking.

Retailers have their own privacy policies and may collect information about visits to their websites. We don’t control what they do once you leave Magpie.

Cookies and information stored on your device

We use only the information storage needed to make Magpiework. We don’t set advertising cookies.

The following explains what Magpie stores on your device:

Our page-view counting doesn’t store anything on your device. Stripe may set cookies or use other storage on its own payment pages, and retailers may do the same when you visit their websites. Those services have their own privacy policies.

The essential storage Magpieuses is exempt from consent requirements under the applicable ePrivacy rules. Because we don’t set advertising cookies, there are no advertising cookies for you to accept or reject.

You can clear or block storage through your browser settings. If you block the sign-in cookie, you won’t be able to remain signed in.

Your privacy rights

Under the GDPR, and the UK GDPR where applicable, you have rights over your personal information. Depending on the circumstances, you can:

Some of these rights depend on the circumstances, and certain legal exceptions may apply.

You can download or delete your Magpie account data yourself through our data and privacy page without needing to email us.

For any other request, contact info@magpie.ie. We’ll respond in accordance with the applicable data protection rules.

Deleting your Magpie account

You can delete your account at any time. You don’t need to explain why.

There are three ways to do it:

Deletion takes effect immediately. It removes your account, your trackers, your push notification addresses and your records of alerts sent to you. Any active trackers stop at once.

We’ll send one final email to confirm the deletion. We retain only information that the retention rules above say must or should outlive an account. This includes an unsubscribe record, if you previously unsubscribed, so that we don’t email you again.

Deleting your Magpieaccount doesn’t delete the product price history we maintain, because that history isn’t a personal profile and doesn’t contain a personal identifier.

Questions, concerns or complaints

If you have a question about your privacy or how we handle your information, please contact us first at info@magpie.ie. We’ll do our best to help.

You also have the right to complain to the relevant data protection authority.

In Ireland, that’s the Data Protection Commission, at 6 Pembroke Row, Dublin 2.

In the UK, you can contact the Information Commissioner’s Office.

Changes to this policy

If we make a significant change to how we handle your personal information, we’ll email you before the change takes effect rather than quietly changing this page.

We’ll update the date at the top whenever we revise the policy.
